Excellent dissection by Pierre, as usual. The message to ordinary citizens must now be crystal clear: that the ANC government has decided on the “Rule of Political Expediency” instead of the the Rule of Law. I believe it is not over-stating the case to say that this is having devastating consequences in a country rife with curruption and rumours of corruption, and with a shocking disrespect for the law as it is. Given this, there is no real incentive anymore for ordinary citzens to respect the country’s laws themselves. This is very dangerous terrain to enter, and lots of indicators can be cited which would show that we are moving further and further into this territory. Once there, however, what will it cost to reverse the situation, if possible at all. As usual, however, it is easier to analyse the problem than to offer a way out. Personally I am somewhat clueless in this regard at the moment. I naively hoped for a new direction after the last elections. That was in vain.
