The level of violence, including murders in the current round of ANC electoral list selections is clearly rising. The stakes are high and what is alarming is that the stakes are not political in the sense of ideas about the future of our country. The stakes relate to whether or not one is employed, has a good salary, can access state resources or determine who gets contracts. Being elected can affect fortunes in material sense of individuals and those who support them. Being removed has disastrous material effect. All of this points to how 22 years of ANC rule has changed the organisation from a political organisation into almost entirely a vehicle for wealth acquisition.
