With only a brief report at hand it appears that the constitutional court has done far more than was expected when the traders challenged the ruling that their application in the Johannesburg high court was not urgent. They are now allowed to return to their places of trading without being hindered. Let us hope that the Johannesburg Council learns some humility and respect for the rights of the poorest of the poor. The majority party in the council claims to speak on behalf of this constituency, yet it committed these shameful and shameless acts, without a moment’s concern for what the process of indefinite verification would mean. They admitted that they had also removed people who were legally entitled under permits they themselves issued to trade there. This is a worthy blow against the current climate of lawlessness and violence that stalks our land!
