Both perceptions of corruption and actual incidence of corruption have risen and in many cases those convicted of offences of corruption have not lost their jobs (only 19% were dismissed).  The scale of public sector fraud and malfeasance cost taxpayers close to R 1 billion in the 2011-2012 year compared with  R 130.6 million in the 2006-7 financial year.
